VISITOR INFORMATION OFFICER – Student Job Posting
Shubenacadie Canal Commission

JOB LOCATION: Fairbanks Centre, 54 Locks Road, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia

RATE OF PAY: $11.00 hr /30 Hours per week

EMPLOYMENT DATES: May 18th – July 28, 2015

HOURS OF WORK: 8:30 am -4:30 pm (Occasional Weekends and Evenings will be required)

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Acts as a liaison with the public to enhance the understanding of the Shubenacadie Canal System, its history, the
  • Develop a knowledge of the history of the Shubenacadie Canal, its present and its potential
  • Develop and implement a guided tour program of the Shubenacadie Canal
  • Provide interpretative information to visitors of the Fairbanks Centre
  • Provide general information on services, public projects, vendors, activities, trails and parks
  • Assist with reviewing, maintaining, and improving the current records system of the Shubenacadie Canal
  • Promote the Shubenacadie Canal and active use of the waterways, trails and parks
  • Assist with commercial product development of the Shubenacadie Canal Commission partners, where
  • Monitor and provide support to events and room bookings during regular operational hours, weekends
  • Other duties, as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Exceptional customer service skills
  • Capable of working independently and/or with a team
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of computers including databases, word, excel, and publisher
  • Knowledge and understanding of Social Media platforms
  • General knowledge of the Shubenacadie Canal, the community and area
  • Previous course work in a recognized Tourism program and/or equivalent training such as Super Host would be a definite asset
  • Previous experience as a tourism operative would be a definite asset
  • Able to physically respond to functions of the job such as lifting and moving objects
  • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident or have official refugee protection status under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Foreign students are not eligible)
  • Between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
  • A registered full-time student at a post-secondary institution in the 14/15 academic year AND intending to return to school full-time in 15/16 academic year
  • Not a member of an employee/board members immediate family
