White Water Rafting

Great rafting is another reason to visit the Canal. The tidal bore rapids provide a unique challenge for the adventurous. With safe and exciting up-river rafting the Shubenacadie Canal is fun for the whole family. Twice each day the greatest tides in the world course up and down the Shubenacadie River. When the moon is at its peak, the tides are especially strong and a wall of water flows against the out going current, creating a Tidal Bore and many, many standing waves. These can take your breath away as you splash your way up the river. When its all in, the high water can be more than 30 feet higher than the low tide level.

The rafting companies follow the tide cycles closely. They know if the incoming water will be 'Strong', Medium', or 'Mild'. You should ask for the best times that suit your travel schedule. Roughly speaking, this summer will see the fastest water in the third week of May, the second week of June, the first weeks of July and August and then, the last week of September.
