The Shubenacadie Canal Commission (SCC) is inviting local food vendors to submit an Expression of Interest in operating an outdoor seasonal café and/or refreshments concession at the Fairbanks Centre at the heart of Shubie Park in Dartmouth from May/June – September/October 2013 (dates to be confirmed).
When Mike Savage was growing up, the best place in his world was his own back yard.
He lived with his family on the shores of Lake MicMac in Dartmouth, hearing the stories of the early 1900's when ice harvests were the main activity, and before that, in the 1800's when the Shubenacadie Canal was the biggest thing Dartmouth had going for it.
It was our first Tree Lighting celebration at the Shubenacadie Canal Commission so we decided to do a little extra... we illuminated 3 natural evergreens and hope that they stand in place for many future Trees Lighting ceremonies.
A splendid volume of aerial photos has been released today by the Shubenacadie Canal Commission. Photographer Andrew Younger and long time river watcher Allan Billard collaborated on the publication. The authors have made the Canal Commission the beneficiary of all the proceedes, assisting the group with their efforts to restore small boat navigation on the waterway.
The very first time the Shubenacadie Canal was traversed, from Halifax to Maitland in a single voyage, it was the tiny paddle-steamer AVERY whch made the trip. That was 29 November 1861. The only remnants of the ship and her voyage are sketchy records in the NS Archives, but the records show that the trip was a success, proving the Canal to be a success.
