He lived with his family on the shores of Lake MicMac in Dartmouth, hearing the stories of the early 1900's when ice harvests were the main activity, and before that, in the 1800's when the Shubenacadie Canal was the biggest thing Dartmouth had going for it.

New Book Published - RIBBON OF WATER

The authors have made the Canal Commission the beneficiary of all the proceedes, assisting the group with their efforts to restore small boat navigation on the waterway.

First Complete Canal Voyage Re-enacted

The very first time the Shubenacadie Canal was traversed, from Halifax to Maitland in a single voyage, it was the tiny paddle-steamer AVERY whch made the trip. That was 29 November 1861. The only remnants of the ship and her voyage are sketchy records in the NS Archives, but the records show that the trip was a success, proving the Canal to be a success.
